What Do These Stones Mean?

I was reading this morning, in Joshua, the story about Israel crossing the Jordan to go to the Promised Land. There are several things about this story that are amazing and interesting, for example, the river God stopped from flowing so the Israelites could cross is the same river Jesus was baptized in, and it's 156 miles long and leads to the Dead Sea. All fun facts.

But my favorite part of the story is the Rock Towers.

God has 1 man from each of the 12 tribes grab a stone on the way through the river and place it on the other side after they cross as a reminder that God brought them through it. The last few verses of Chapter 4 are my favorite:

21 And he said to the people of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 then you shall let your children know,‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.”

So God did something crazy amazing, like He always does. Then He has them make this little monument so when people see it they ask what it's all about and then they're told the story.

In our lives, when things happen we "Build a Monument" with our responses, outlooks, feelings, and opinions that we share with people when new situations happen.

So what do our Monuments say is Mighty?

Our anger that we didn't get a promotion? Our fear of failing? Our frustration that we aren't moving forward? Our loneliness?

OR are we setting up monuments about God’s faithfulness through a season of fear? His love for me even in my darkest moment… The Peace He gives that surpasses all understanding...

Guys, we create Monuments for all to see when we react to the things we experience in our lives... So what will you tell people when they ask you about your Monuments?

Grace & Peace
